Cutty Sark is the name of a beautiful witch in the poem Tam O’Shanter written by Robert Burns in 1790. The figurehead of the Cutty Sark ship portrays the moment when the witch attempts to catch hold of Tam as he flees away on horseback, as described in the poem:
Ae spring brought off her master hale,
But left behind her ain grey tail:
The carlin claught her by the rump,
And left poor Maggie scarce a stump
