David Ward was appointed as lead artist to work with the team responsible for the regeneration of Cromer’s seafront and pier in 2005. This work incorporates details of historic lifeboat rescues into the landscaping of the Cromer Pier forecourt using brass inlaid text in a unique font designed for Cromer by typographer Ray Carpenter. Cromer’s famous flint walls are illuminated at night by subtle washes of coloured light that Ward developed with lighting designer Chris Baldwin.
‘The work I made makes reference to the lifeboat service in Cromer, which has an exceptionally long history and points to some of the life saving rescues carried out from there. The site was chosen because the modern boat is launched from the end of the pier and the work acknowledges the gravity of the task undertaken by the courageous crews who, in emergencies, run up those steps and along the pier to take their boat out to sea.’ (David Ward)
